I talked to Larry at the JALTCALL conference  in Kyoto about his career, technology, the future of higher education and had a great time! Please enjoy!

His presentations, via Prezi, are here… and worth a look.

A wonderful interview. Sincere, true and lots of stories that hit home to old timers and new teachers alike.

Thanks for doing this – made me think about a few things in my own life…..

    Cheers,

Thanks David. I really enjoyed this one. Larry is great.. it turns out he used to work where I work now. I’m glad to have met him, and spent a bit of time with him on his stay here. As I mentioned elsewhere on the site, I was actually asked to do these JALTCALL interviews by the conference organisers… previous interviews have all been with people I already admired and sought out myself. I suppose you could say that the whole project is entirely selfish – as I prepare to do an interview I read around the interviewee’s work, I think about what they have written and done, and it all helps me develop my understanding of teaching. Then, after the preparation, i get to spend half an hour or so chatting with nice people about interesting things. Comments like yours at least indicate that others are getting something out of it too ;)

Just to let you know, I am EXTREMELY excited about some of the interviews coming up….. this year’s JALT conference will be brilliant, if I can schedule everyone!

There is something to be said for “selfishness”! It isn’t the totally negative thing made out to be.

What I admire most about a good interview is how you (and others) let the person speak and keep your questions, comments to a minimum. That is the art and probably we are seeing so little of it – because much is probably done pragmatically through body language, nuance etc….

Look forward to the JALT interviews. Don’t worry, there are people getting stuff from this… we are on the edge of something…

    David
